This month, I had the privilege of joining the EDA National Roadshow as their keynote speaker, engaging with economic development leaders across the country on one central question:

How do we prepare our communities for a future that is no longer linear, it's exponential?

What became clear in every room is we are navigating change and living through a fundamental reshaping of how economies grow, compete, and create value.

The shift from linear to exponential

For decades, economic development has been built on steady, incremental gains forecasting from past trends and planning within familiar, predictable cycles.

That model is no longer fit for purpose.

Today, technologies such as artificial intelligence, advanced robotics, synthetic biology and next‑generation networks are accelerating at a pace that outstrips traditional planning frameworks. What we are experiencing is not gentle disruption, but step‑change transformation.

Industries are now being redefined in years, not decades. Jobs are evolving faster than education systems can adapt. Entirely new categories of value are emerging, often at the convergence of multiple technologies, reshaping how communities learn, work and thrive.

Why this matters for communities

The implications for economic development are profound. Communities that continue to plan linearly risk being left behind not because they lack resources, but because they are using the wrong lens.

In contrast, communities that embrace exponential thinking are better positioned to:

  • Attract investment aligned with future industries
  • Build resilience in the face of rapid change
  • Create environments where innovation and talent can thrive

This is no longer about competing on cost or location alone. It is about capability, adaptability, and vision.

Emerging signals leaders cannot ignore

Across the roadshow, several themes consistently surfaced:

1. Convergence is the new driver of growth
Breakthroughs are increasingly happening at the intersection of technologies, not within silos.

2. Talent ecosystems are replacing traditional workforce models
The future workforce is more fluid, global, and skills-based than ever before.

3. Capital is shifting toward future-focused regions
Investment is flowing to places that demonstrate readiness for what’s next, not just strength in what has been.

4. The pace of change is accelerating decision-making cycles
Leaders must become comfortable making strategic decisions with less certainty but greater urgency.

A critical moment for leadership

If there was one takeaway from this roadshow, it is this:

We are at an inflection point.

The decisions made in the next few years will shape the economic trajectory of communities for decades to come.

This requires a shift in mindset, from protecting the present to actively designing the future.

It also requires courage:

  • To rethink long-standing assumptions
  • To invest ahead of certainty
  • To lead conversations that may feel uncomfortable, but are necessary

A special thank you to Jacqueline Brinkman, the EDA team, the EDA Board, and all EDA members for the opportunity to be part of this year’s Roadshow. Your leadership, openness, and commitment to elevating these conversations made every session not only insightful, but genuinely inspiring.

I left the roadshow energised by the level of engagement and commitment from leaders across the country. There is a clear recognition that while the challenges are complex, the opportunities are significant for those willing to act. The question is not whether change is coming. It is whether we are ready to meet it.
